Anemia

  • *** Reduction in the total Mass(volume) of circulating RBC* reduction in Oxygen carrying capacity

How u measure RBC mass of total blood ?

  • We use Surrogates like HB,MCV,Hct,RBC count

🧠

  1. HCT - percentage of Rbc in the blood [Ex:45% of RBC , 55% plasma, >1% WBC]
  2. Hb - percentage of protein (Hemoglobin) per volume [Ex:12.5g/dl]
  3. MCV(mean cell/Corpuscular volume) - Average size of RBC [Example;80/fl]
  • Problems with HB,HCT,Rbc count
    1. Haemorrhage loss of RBC and fluid but normal HB,HCT in the sample.
    2. IV infusion increase in plasma HCT,HB,RBC count due to volume change

Anemia based on MCV(Mean size of RBC)
