Dyspnea

  • uncomfortable sensation of breath-lessness like,
    • shortness of breath, chest tightness, or difficulty breathing
  • Can be non-urgent & Life threathning

Tachypnea

Greater than normal respiratory rate.

Normal 44 cycles/min in a newborn to 14 to 18 cycles/min in adults.

Hyperventilation

A minute ventilation that exceeds metabolic demand.

Dyspnea on Exertion

Dyspnea by physical effort. It often is quantified simply as the number of stairs or number of blocks tolerated before symptom onset.

Orthopnea

Dyspnea in a sleeping position.

described as the number of pillows the patient uses to rest comfortably in bed (e.g., two-pillow orthopnea).

Paroxysmal Nocturnal Dyspnea

Sudden onset of dyspnea occurring while reclining at night.
