Hypertension Urgency/ Emergency

  • Measure blood pressure in both arms in a narrow time interval while the patient is quietly resting. Check blood pressure several times before starting antihypertensive therapy.

Goal in Stable pt - to prevent hypoperfusion

  • reduce SBP no more than 25% in the first hour;
  • then reduce to 160/100 mm Hg over the next 2 to 6 hours and
  • then to normal over the following 24 to 48 hours.
